Title IX was created for both genders but particularly for females so women could have access to education, equal pay in employment, and particularly to have equal access to sports as men do. Title IX was passed on June 23, 1972 and under this law, it states:
According to www.titleix.info, prior to Title IX, women
were only allowed to participate in physical activities that the society
thought was appropriate for girls such as cheerleading, dancing and many more.
It was really impossible for females to participate in sports like soccer,
football, basketball and other competitive athletic games. Although most females participate in males
games today, women still have a long way to go because there are not enough
resources and funds from the government that support women sports as that of
men.
In addition, women before Title IX were
not allowed to attend medical, law or school because our patriarchy society
thought these schools were not appropriate for women. However, women were
allowed to take vocational courses in high school. But upon graduation, they
were denied so many opportunities when they try to enter college in attempt to
study law, medicine, engineering and many more (www.titleix.info). Since Title IX, women now
have access to any college or school of their choice without any denial. Further more, when it comes to employment,
women were not paid as equal as men before Title IX. Most jobs that were
popular for women before Title IX were that of teaching jobs in elementary,
secondary schools, or women’s colleges (www.titleix.info). However, since Title IX, women now have
access to many employments. Despite the employment granted to women, there are
still some challenges and discrimination women face in today in the career
world. Women now earn 77 cents to every dollar men earn in most work forces.
Overall Title IX did opened many
doors for women not only in education, equal pay, athletics but also provided
laws that will prevent women from sexual harassment, improve learning
environment, promote education for pregnant and parenting students and many
more. Without Title IX, women would not have access to such benefits.
